Vic: Quarry accused released on bail
Two university students accused of blowing up a car have been freed on bail after a
Melbourne court heard the blast was set as an adventure.
Twenty-year old DEREK HUBREGTSE of Notting Hill and LEON BOWEN, also 20, of South Yarra,
allegedly used stolen explosives to blow up a $30,000 Holden Commodore in suburban Glen
Waverley last month.
The court's heard how BOWEN still held a grudge against his high-school girlfriend,
the daughter of the car owner, and suggested the pair bomb the car.
Magistrate BARBARA COTTERELL's ordered psychiatric reports on the pair after the court
earlier heard details of the Port Arthur massacre featured in HUBREGTSE's diary.
But after examining the diaries today, Ms COTTERELL says the only reference to the
Port Arthur massacre is brief, in very poor taste and a typical schoolyard joke.
She says there's nothing to indicate the pair are potentially dangerous and has released
them on the condition they return to live with their parents.
They're due to reappear in the same court next year.
