Pressure for peace // Albright to seek acceleration of Mideast talks

WASHINGTON After seven months of behind-the-scenes diplomacy,U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is prepared to commit toaccelerated, high-profile Mideast peace talks, aimed at concluding adeal between Israel and the Palestinians up to a year earlier thanthe May, 1999, target, U.S. officials said.

Albright will propose advancing both the pace and the agendawhen she makes her first trip to the region as secretary of state atthe end of the month. Her initial goal will be to set up mechanismsfor concluding the complex process launched in 1993, officials say.
